Starting an Online Business

Starting up a business can be both exciting and rewarding, but it is also a daunting task and involves a lot of effort and can be costly.  You need to be determined and decisive because if you don’t have the drive to succeed and can’t make decisions, it will make developing a business extremely hard.  With 82% of people connection to the internet (according to ITU, the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technology issues) it makes it possible for almost would-be business persons to setup from their broadband connected homes.

So what are the advantages of doing business from home?

  • Low startup costs – Physical premises are replaced by a web server, shop fittings are replaced by an online shopping cart and local advertisements can be replaced with search marketing and PPC campaigns (such as adwords).  This means that people with even the smallest of budgets can get a business off the ground.  Costs of buying a domain name can be less than £10/per year at domain registrars such as Godaddy.com and hosting costs can start at just a few pounds a month.
  • Long Opening Hours – Internet businesses can remain open 24 hours a day and some businesses can be left almost to run themselves efficiently and with low-maintenance.
  • Compete on equal terms – With the internet it is possible to compete with much bigger companies on fairly equal terms, you may not have the advertising revenue of some of the big players, but a well designed website can look just good and operate just as smoothly.

Obviously being able to startup a business quickly and with low setup costs means that there is likely to be a lot of other people with the same idea, so there can be a huge amount of competition.  All this means is that you need to plan to be one step ahead of them and take that bit of extra care to make sure your business is more visible and maintains a reputation for being trustworthy and reliable.
